Signs of Burnout
Burnout refers to mental and physical exhaustion that takes away the joy from your job, friendships, and family interactions. This may result from overexposure to stressful conditions on a regular basis, and it isn’t always easy to spot. With that in mind, here are some signs and symptoms associated with burnout.
- Exhaustion – Refers to a state of being physically and emotionally exhausted. Headaches, stomachaches, and changes in food or sleeping patterns are all possible physical signs.
- Isolation – Burnout causes people to feel overwhelmed. As a result, individuals may withdraw from social situations and isolate themselves from friends, family, and co-workers.
- Fantasy escapes – People with burnout may fantasize about running away or taking a solo trip because they are exasperated with their never-ending work responsibilities. Others even resort to using drugs, alcohol, or food to dull their emotional agony in extreme circumstances.
- Irritability – People who are burned out are more likely to lose their cool with acquaintances, co-workers, and family members. Dealing with everyday concerns such as preparing for a work meeting, delivering kids to school, and taking care of domestic chores may get overwhelming, especially when things don’t go as planned.
Burnout, like other forms of long-term stress, can weaken your immune system, making you more vulnerable to colds, flu, and insomnia. Burnout may also lead to mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Be careful of these signs!
