Barn Raising 2024: Leading Indonesian Companies Unite for Sustainable Business Practices Through B Corp Certification
In celebration of the B Corp month, the Barn Raising 2024 event “Moving Forward Together for Better Indonesia” took place in Jakarta on 7 March 2024. It brought together a multitude of leading Indonesian companies united under the B Corp (B Corporation) Community Indonesia banner, reaffirming their commitment to fostering businesses that positively impact the environment and society.
Among the distinguished figures present were Rosy Wediawaty, Director of Trade, Investment, and International Economic Cooperation at the Ministry of National Development Planning/BAPPENAS; Muhammad Neil El Himam, Deputy for Digital Economy and Creative Products at the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy; Marcello Palazzi, Co-Founder of B Lab Europe; Isik Oguzertem, Director of Process and External Verification at B Lab Global; Thomas Ng, Lead of B Market Builder Southeast Asia; as well as representatives from certified B Corp companies in Indonesia.
Notable attendees included Laurent Boissier, CEO of Danone Indonesia; Bertram Flesch, Chief Sustainability Officer of Sukkhacitta; and Mercy Aritonang, Chief People Officer of The Body Shop Indonesia.
Although the event expected only 80 attendees, up to 120 participants joined, showcasing the overreaching impact B Corp has on the Indonesian business landscape.
Throughout the event, speakers shared insights into how the B Corp movement can guide businesses towards meeting and revolutionizing environmental, social, and governance standards. The discussions aimed to raise awareness among Indonesian businesses about the importance of transitioning to more responsible, transparent, and accountable operations through B Corp certification.
Rosy Wediawaty expressed confidence in B Corp certification, highlighting its potential to steer the private sector towards achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) while enhancing competitiveness in the global market, benefiting both companies and the government. Muhammad Neil El Himam emphasized the importance of active participation from the tourism industry in the B Corp Movement, stressing the need to consider environmental and social impacts alongside business interests. Isik Oguzertem outlined the vision of B Corp Community Indonesia in supporting SDGs and mentioned ongoing efforts to redesign standards to comprehensively address all challenges.
The B Corp Community Indonesia includes companies that have either attained or are in the process of obtaining B Corp certification. This globally recognized certification signifies organizations’ high standards in social, environmental, and labor practices, alongside public transparency and accountability in balancing profit and social objectives.
