Shaping The Future: Insights From ASEAN’s Inaugural Impact Conference

On 6 March 2024, Bintang Capital Partners in collaboration with B Market Builder Southeast Asia organized their inaugural impact conference titled “Building a Better Future Together”. The conference aimed to explore and highlight the factors contributing to the sluggish growth of the B Corp movement in ASEAN compared to its global expansion and discuss potential strategies for improvement. In conjunction with B Corp month, the conference was also held to recognize the profound impact of the B Corp movement on the Malaysian and ASEAN economies.
Held at Sentul Depot, Kuala Lumpur, the event featured thought leaders at the forefront of the impact movement. Among its exclusive lineup of keynote speakers were YB Tuan Nik Nazmi, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability; YB Liew Chin Tong, the Deputy Minister of Investments, Trade, and Industry, and Isik Oguzertem, the Director of Certification & Verification of B Lab Global.
In his keynote address, YB Liew Chin Tong emphasized B Corps’ impact as a reminder to build a more inclusive economy. He highlighted the importance of businesses evolving to prioritize social and environmental impact to integrate themselves successfully into the global economy. Representing B Lab Global, Isik Oguzertem, highlighted the advantages experienced by certified B Corps in his speech. He elaborated on how B Corps outperformed non-B Corps during the pandemic lockdown, citing a 95% survival rate and 79% experiencing growth. Additionally, certified B Corps also maintain the lowest employee turnover and successfully attract top-tier talent.
The panel discussions mainly focussed on the competitive edge of ESG in today’s impact-focused economy and the challenges of achieving B Corp certification. Thomas Ng represented B Market Builder SEA as one of the conference speakers and moderators.
Overall, the conference served as the perfect opportunity for Bintang Capital Partners to showcase leading impact businesses across the region and in Malaysia. Five B Corp-certified companies and three aspiring B Corps from Malaysia were invited to set up booths in the venue to promote their brands and stories. The conference venue was packed with 138 attendees, consisting of 70% corporation representatives, 20% government agency representatives, and 10% from non-profit organizations.
