Genashtim Featured in The Edge Malaysia: Accelerating Disability Inclusion
In a recent feature by The Edge Malaysia, the spotlight was cast on four remarkable individuals at Genashtim – Tan Ee Beng, Amalina Hares, Mazrina Mahat, and Rajkumar Selvaraj – who defy conventional perceptions of ability in the workforce. Thomas Ng, Founder and CEO of Genashtim, and Grace Gan, manager of the Enabling Academy (EA), were also featured as pioneers of extensive disability inclusion, including neurodiversity within corporate environments.
Tan Ee Beng: Engineering Inclusion Through Resilience
Tan Ee Beng’s journey resonates deeply with many people with disabilities (PWDs) striving for recognition and opportunity. Despite facing obstacles due to his visual impairment, Tan’s undying resilience led him to Genashtim, where he now spearheads the ESG services department.
Sharing an unpleasant experience at his previous workplace, Tan expressed disappointment with societal perceptions of people with disabilities. However, he remains optimistic with a laser focus on his abilities and the slow yet sure realization that PWDs need support, not sympathy.
Thomas Ng: From Disappointment to Development
As the founder of Genashtim, Thomas Ng’s vision for inclusive employment began with a fascination with the talents of people with disabilities (PWDs) – the computer skills of blind students at a school in the Philippines blew his mind.
His amazement quickly dulled when he saw that these students weren’t being employed. Thus, a for-profit social enterprise that transcends traditional hiring norms and workplaces took shape in Thomas’ hands and Genashtim was born in 2008, providing people with a host of disabilities with sustainable remote employment.
Thomas’ unwavering dedication to empowering PWDs through gainful remote employment opportunities grew to include employees across six continents, all working remotely.
Amalina Hares and Mazrina Mahat: Champions of Remote Work and Inclusivity
Amalina Hares and Mazrina Mahat are living proof that physical challenges do not deter participation in the workforce. They effortlessly navigate remote work environments while balancing maternal duties.
A Southeast Asian Games bronze medal winner, Amalina shared how working at Genashtim allows her to personalize her workspace according to her requirements. On the other hand, Mazrina is grateful to be able to work and take care of her epileptic daughter, underscoring the transformative potential of flexible work arrangements.
Rajkumar Raj: Achieving Success Through a Growth Mindset
Raj, an independent verification analyst (IVA) for B Corp exemplifies the value of harnessing diverse perspectives in driving disability inclusion.
He emphasizes tackling challenges head-on with a progressive mindset to move forward and create more opportunities, rejecting complacency.
Grace Gan: Empowering the Neurodivergent Community for Employment
Grace Gan’s leadership at Yayasan Gamuda’s Enabling Academy (EA) embodies a steadfast commitment to advancing neurodiversity in the workplace. Through innovative programs and strategic partnerships, Gan and her team redefine corporate inclusivity, facilitating neurodiverse individuals to realize their full potential.
The Enabling Academy’s holistic approach to employment transition and ongoing support exemplifies the transformative power of collaborative initiatives in driving systemic change to create a vibrant inclusive ecosystem where there is opportunity, support, and accessibility across the disability and neurodivergent spectrum.
