Written by: Faryal Batool

How do you know if the product you’re buying was ethically produced, from raw material to store shelf? Tracing a company’s full supply chain yourself could take months of research, and even then, you’d likely come up short.

That’s exactly the problem that certification logos solve.

Symbols like Fairtrade, Rainforest Alliance, USDA Organic, and FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) signal that an independent organization has evaluated the product, or the company behind it, against defined standards covering environmental impact, labor practices, transparency, and governance.

For businesses, these certifications go beyond external credibility. They provide a structured framework to measure performance and demonstrate accountability to customers, investors, and partners.

B Corp – Accountable to More Than Profit

One certification that has gained significant global traction is B Corp, recognized by a simple letter “B” inside a circle.

“B” stands for Benefit. A Certified B Corporation meets rigorous standards of social and environmental performance, transparency, and accountability. To balance profit with purpose, B Corps create positive value for workers, communities, customers, and the environment.

To earn this certification, companies must complete the B Impact Assessment and achieve a minimum qualifying score across five areas: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers. Certification is not a one-time milestone; it requires a commitment to continuous improvement.

Today, thousands of companies across more than 100 countries and 150+ industries carry this certification, demonstrating that responsible business practices can scale globally.

B Lab – The Organization Behind the Movement

B Lab, a nonprofit founded in 2006 by Andrew Kassoy, Jay Coen Gilbert, and Bart Houlahan, is the organization behind B Corp certification. Their core belief is that businesses should be held accountable not only for financial performance but for their impact on society and the planet.

They designed the B Impact Assessment (BIA) as the tool to operationalize that belief, a comprehensive, scored evaluation of a company’s real-world practices, not just its stated values.

The certification is a rigorous, evidence-based process. And the growing global demand for B Corp certification means that verification capacity matters enormously to maintaining its integrity.

To-Cert – Verification Analysts Keeping the Standard Credible

As B Corp certification reached record demand, B Lab turned to a trusted partner to help scale verification without compromising the process.

That partner is Genashtim, a Certified B Corp and global social enterprise operating across 41 countries. Through its subsidiary To-Cert, Genashtim provides independent verification analysts (IVAs) who work directly within B Lab’s certification process.

To-Cert’s analysts review companies’ B Impact Assessments, scrutinize supporting documentation, and verify whether a company’s social and environmental performance data accurately reflects reality. Their work covers eligibility reviews, legal requirement confirmation, impact business model validation, and verification of scoring across the BIA’s five categories. Analysts operate under non-disclosure and conflict-of-interest agreements and are selected for multilingual proficiency across regions spanning Africa, the Americas, Asia, Australia, and Europe.

Every step of this rigorous process accumulates into one thing: the right to carry the B logo. That’s what makes the symbol more meaningful.

One Symbol. A Global Commitment.

March is B Corp Month, and “A Simple Symbol, A Powerful Signal” is this year’s theme.

That “B” inside a circle is the result of assessments reviewed, documents scrutinized, and claims independently verified. Each B Corp that carries the logo is different in what it does, but identical in what that mark has required of them.

This year’s campaign invites B Corps to do more than display the logo. It’s a call to talk openly about the work behind the certification, the actions taken to earn it, the people who made it happen, and the improvements planned for the future. It’s also an invitation for businesses still on the journey to recognize that certification is not a finish line. It is a framework for building something that lasts.

For those ready to take that commitment further, the B Corp Asia Summit 2026 is where strategy meets community. On June 22-23, 2026, the summit brings together over 400 B Corps and business leaders from across the Asia-Pacific region in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to share what it took to earn the symbol, deepen the accountability it demands, and shape what responsible business looks like.

While the “B” symbol is simple, what it represents is anything but.

Written by: Hema Krishnan

Some stories remain close to our hearts because we see ourselves in the story’s character. Togo is one such character in a story that isn’t loud or triumphant; it’s quiet, stubborn, purposeful, unexpected, yet deeply human – just like Genashtim.

Surviving the Beginning No One, Thought You Would

Togo was born in Nome, Alaska in 1913. As a puppy, he was so sick and fragile that he needed intensive care from Constance Seppala, the wife of a musher, sled dog trainer, and dog breeder, Leonhard Seppala. Against all odds, the puppy survived and grew into a restless, undersized dog. Leonhard deemed the bundle of energetic fur difficult, unreliable, and incapable of serious work.

The rambunctious pup was dismissed early, overlooked in favor of dogs that looked stronger and more promising. But Constance saw the tenacious puppy’s heart of a survivor making up for all his so-called shortcomings. Leonhard brushed off his wife’s opinions and gave Togo away – TWICE. Yet, the pup returned both times, much to his annoyance and his wife’s amusement.

Soon, Togo would prove Leonhard wrong. Because the right opportunity has a way of correcting a doubtful first impression.

The Day Togo Found His Purpose

When an important round trip for a client came up, Leonhard tethered Togo to his kennel – sternly telling the dog to stay. Soon after Leonhard left with his sled dog team, Togo broke free and ran all the way to the cabin where Leonhard and his sled dogs were spending the night. The next morning, he caused so much chaos – chasing reindeer and distracting the sled dogs with his antics, Leonhard had no choice but to harness the 8-month-old puppy to the sled.

Togo instantly calmed. During the run, Togo outran every single dog – finally, he was harnessed to lead. The underdog was now the lead dog with unmatched prowess.

The Journey That History Almost Got Wrong

When Togo was 12 and should have been retired in 1925, he ran the most important, treacherous trip of his life.

That year, as a massive snowstorm closed in on Nome, a deadly diphtheria outbreak was making children very sick. Their survival depended on an impossible relay across frozen land to fetch the serum to treat the disease. Leonhard was tasked with delivering the life-saving medicine, and he entrusted Togo with the job.

Togo bravely led the sled dog team, with Leonhard at command, armed with the heart of a survivor.

The legendary 1925 run became known as the Serum Run, and Balto would be remembered as the dog who delivered the serum to treat the children.

But it was Togo who ran the lion’s share of the miles, crossing the most dangerous terrain, battling the harshest winds, and pushing far beyond what anyone thought he could endure. His contribution was essential, though less visible.

The Quiet Strength of the Underdog

That is the heart of a survivor. Survivors are often underestimated. They are the underdogs: the ones whose backgrounds, circumstances, or perceived limitations cause others to doubt them. Many people at Genashtim know this experience very well. Team members from the marginalized communities, persons with disabilities, refugees, seniors, LGBTQ individuals, and women in oppressed environments have been told, in subtle and overt ways, that they were not enough, not capable, not the obvious choice.

Proving Worth Through Perseverance, Not Perception

Like Togo, they proved otherwise – not through words, but through perseverance. Not through how they were seen, but through what they continued to do. Progress was earned step by step, mile by mile, in moments when quitting would have been easier than continuing.

Loyalty That Lasts Beyond Recognition

What makes Togo’s story especially powerful is not just how far he ran, but how long he stayed. He served Leonhard Seppala faithfully for more than twelve years, running even as age slowed him and his fur turned gray. His loyalty was never transactional. It came from trust, belief, and commitment to something larger than himself. That same quiet loyalty lives on in the longest-serving employees at Genashtim. They chose to stay, contribute, and grow with Genashtim over many years.

Courage When Comfort Is No Longer an Option

The Serum Run was never about comfort or recognition. It was about responsibility and resolve under extreme pressure. In much the same way, the work at Genashtim often demands pushing forward despite uncertainty, limited resources, and difficult conditions. We’re driven not by ease, but by purpose and collective courage.

Endurance as a Form of Purpose

Every meaningful endeavor has its own version of the Serum Run. These are the moments when the path forward looks impossible, and the stakes are high. Success in such moments rarely comes from brilliance alone. It comes from endurance, trust, and continuing forward with everything you have, even when no one is watching.

When Survival Becomes the Greatest Strength

Togo reminds us that greatness doesn’t always look grand. Sometimes it looks like survival. Sometimes it looks like loyalty. Sometimes it looks like refusing to accept the limits others place on you.

The Heart That Keeps Running Forward

At Genashtim, that same spirit quietly fuels the people behind the work. With the heart of a survivor, Genashtim has turned what many believed was impossible into something undeniably possible and continues to run forward, no matter the odds.

Written by: Faryal Batool

I have a cat and a dog. I feed them the same food, in the same quantity, because I believe in equality.

But there is a problem. If the portion is small, my dog keeps asking for more. If the portion is large, my cat eats a little, walks away, and the rest of the food is wasted.

So, what am I doing wrong?

The issue is not intent, nor is it neglect. The issue is the assumption that equal treatment will naturally lead to fair outcomes. In reality, a cat and a dog have different needs, behaviors, and capacities. Treating them identically does not account for those differences and leads to inefficiency and imbalance.

This simple analogy reflects a broader challenge across systems that shapes how resources, opportunities, and expectations are distributed. Equality, while well-intentioned, doesn’t always result in fairness. This is where equity becomes essential, and why the “E” in DEI matters.

What Equity Means in Practice

Equity is a framework for understanding how systems distribute access, opportunity, and outcomes, and for addressing imbalances that arise as a result.

The purpose of equity isn’t to treat everyone the same, but to ensure that systems are designed in a way that allows people to succeed, given different starting points and constraints. The goal is fair outcomes, not identical inputs.

Inequity by Design

To understand why equity matters, we must examine how seemingly fair systems can yield unfair results. Systemic inequity often emerges not from overt bias, but from long-standing practices that appear objective or merit-based. These practices, however, can produce consistent and measurable disparities over time.

Hiring and talent development provide a clear example. Requirements such as credentials from select institutions, uninterrupted career paths, or experience in specific organizations are commonly treated as indicators of merit.

In practice, they can exclude capable individuals who lack access to elite education, take career breaks, enter the workforce through non-traditional pathways, or face barriers due to disabilities. The result is a narrower definition of talent rather than a lack of ability.

These disparities don’t depend on biased intent. Systems can produce unequal outcomes simply by applying rules without considering different starting points. And when gaps appear, they’re often explained as differences in motivation, cultural fitness, or performance, rather than as structural consequences.

Shifting the Perspective

An equity lens changes this perspective. It moves the focus from determining whether policies are applied consistently to whether they produce fair outcomes.

For leaders and HR professionals, this approach enables data-driven evaluation, reduces unintended exclusion, and better leverages organizational talent. Equity is about designing systems that align with organizational goals, manage risk, and support long-term performance.

Why Equity Is Essential to Effective DEI

DEI efforts risk being symbolic rather than transformative if they focus only on representation without examining the systems that shape retention, advancement, and access to leadership.

Equity shifts the focus from intention to impact. It prompts organizations to ask whether policies and practices genuinely support diverse talent, including people with disabilities, career-break returners, and those from non-traditional backgrounds, or whether they unintentionally reinforce existing advantages.

Equity doesn’t lower standards or replace accountability. Rather, it ensures that expectations are meaningful, accessible, and aligned with the actual requirements of the role or outcome.

By integrating equity, DEI moves beyond aspiration and becomes actionable. It allows organizations to design systems that are fair, inclusive, and capable of unlocking the full potential of their workforce.

How Equity Supports Organizational Performance – The Genashtim Example

Equity isn’t just a social or ethical consideration; it’s a strategic one. But what does this look like in practice?

Genashtim provides a useful example of equity in action. The organization focuses on inclusive employment, particularly for people with disabilities, by designing work structures that prioritize flexibility, accessibility, and outcome-based performance.

Rather than requiring individuals to adapt to rigid workplace norms, Genashtim adapted the workplace itself. A 100% remote model, flexible schedules, and accessible technologies allowed the organization to access a broader talent pool without compromising performance expectations.

The result? Increased productivity and engagement, demonstrating that equity-driven design can strengthen, rather than dilute, organizational capability.

Moving Forward with Intentionality

Equity is not a temporary initiative or a compliance exercise but a way of evaluating how systems function and who they benefit.

As organizations operate in increasingly diverse and complex environments, relying solely on equal treatment will be insufficient. Equity provides the tools to align values with outcomes by addressing structural barriers and enabling broader participation.

This work requires thoughtful analysis, clear metrics, and sustained leadership commitment. It also requires a willingness to adjust long-standing practices when evidence shows they produce unequal results.

It is time to move beyond intentions and examine outcomes. When systems are designed with equity in mind, organizations are better positioned to attract talent, foster innovation, and achieve sustainable success.

The SME Johor Selatan ESG Engagement Session 2025 was held on 2 December in Johor Bahru at the Setia Convention Centre, Setia Tropika. Organized in partnership with the Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA), the conference explored how SMEs can manage business risks while integrating ESG practices in a competitive and regulated environment.

The conference focused on turning ESG from a theoretical concept into concrete action. Participants gained exposure to frameworks, tools, and real-world SME case studies that demonstrated how sustainability can shape stronger business performance. The message was clear: delayed ESG adoption exposes SMEs to regulatory, reputational, and financial risks. Timely action, however, strengthens operations, enhances market positioning, and unlocks long-term growth.

Genashtim’s Head of ESG Services and B Market Builder SEA Director, Ee Bang Tan, was one of the key speakers. He highlighted that ESG presents both a potential business risk and a strategic opportunity. Rather than treating it as a compliance exercise, he encouraged SMEs to recognize ESG as a lever for business expansion. Ee Bang also introduced the B Impact Assessment, which is a free, global benchmarking tool that helps SMEs identify gaps, prioritize improvements, and build credibility with investors, customers, and international partners. The tool also provides a structured pathway toward B Corp certification.

The session gathered experts from finance, government, and industry, who shared practical insights and actionable strategies that SMEs can adopt to implement ESG effectively:

Mr. Ma of Alliance Bank Malaysia shared how the bank integrates ESG into lending and advisory services to strengthen SME resilience.

Mr. Syed Kamal Muzaffa from MIDA highlighted government incentives and frameworks to support faster ESG adoption across the SME sector.

Mr. Kian Seah of Heng Hiap Industries shared insights into the business advantages gained from B Corp certification and MIDA grants, including access to new market.

Mr. Masaaki Hamada of Asuene APAC introduced digital tools that help SMEs track emissions and reduce their carbon footprint.

Ms. Sun of SUNLEE Insurance discussed ways SMEs can mitigate ESG-related risk through tailored insurance solutions.

Together, the speakers provided SMEs with actionable guidance on integrating ESG into operations, managing risks, and unlocking growth opportunities.

Genashtim is honored to have participated in the event that reflects the rising momentum of ESG adoption among Malaysian SMEs. The session reinforced how ESG can serve as a strategic lever for tangible growth, helping SMEs attract partners, enter new markets, and make operational decisions with measurable impact. With the right tools and a clear roadmap, sustainability becomes a driver for expansion and credibility rather than a compliance obligation.

Written by: Hema Krishnan

Ronnie Blair’s story of survival, second chances, and the quiet power of one kind act

On the night of March 18, 2018, eight-year-old Ronnie O’Neal IV’s life was changed forever. His mother and younger sister were killed in a horrific familicide; Ronnie himself was stabbed and set on fire. He survived against terrible odds and testified against his own father, the murderer of his family – one of the most difficult and bravest things a child could do. Then, a single, life-changing act of kindness re-shaped his future.

From horror to home

One of the detectives who responded to the crime scene was Mike Blair. He and his wife, Danyel, eventually took Ronnie into their home, officially adopting him in November 2019. What followed was profound: Ronnie changed his last name to Blair, found stability and love in a house with siblings and parents who chose him, and began to rebuild his childhood uninterrupted by violence. The detective’s decision to adopt Ronnie was a single personal choice that redirected a young life from trauma toward healing.

The ripple effect of one kind act

There’s something almost mathematical about kindness: small acts, done with intention, produce far-reaching ripples. Detective Mike Blair’s adoption of Ronnie is not only an emotional rescue; it’s a tangible social repair. A child who is the victim of unimaginable violence that could’ve ruined his life, gained a family, mentorship, and an anchored sense of belonging. And the world gained someone whose future is no longer limited by one night’s tragedy. The truth remains that one person’s act of kindness forever changed a life.

Where social enterprise meets human compassion, Genashtim and Thomas Ng

That same logic, that deliberate choices can alter many lives, underpins the mission of Genashtim and its founder, Thomas Ng. After a long corporate career, Thomas created Genashtim to employ those who face exclusion: people with disabilities (PWDs), refugees, seniors, and other disadvantaged groups. Technology, training, and inclusive hiring methods are leveraged to create sustainable employment and dignity for people often pushed to society’s margins. By designing work that matches people’s abilities and removing barriers, Genashtim scales kindness into opportunity.

Thomas Ng’s work is not identical to taking a child into your home, but it is the social equivalent: each job created, each training module delivered, each supportive workplace policy implemented is an act of uplift:

Genashtim gives many people the predictable income, purpose, and social acceptance that sustain a life.

Analyse impact and financial materiality

Both are demonstrations of how focused, compassionate action converts vulnerability into possibility.

The moral is simple and urgent

When we look at Ronnie’s survival and adoption beside Genashtim’s model, the message is the same: systems matter, but individual choices move systems. One detective adopted a child. One founder built an inclusive company. Both acts required attention, commitment, and the willingness to say, “I will be the one,” stepping into responsibility rather than delegating it. Those choices break cycles of neglect and create new stories.

If you work inside an organization like Genashtim, or if you are part of a family, a school, a faith community, or a business, you already hold the levers to change lives. Sometimes the change is an adoption. Sometimes it’s hiring a person who needs a chance or mentoring a young person who has lost their way. All of these are valid, profound, and cumulative.

A gentle call to the Genashtim family – Pay It Forward

To the Genashtim family, the work Thomas Ng has stewarded and the example set by the Blairs is an invitation to continue converting compassion into action. We already build livelihoods and dignity; now imagine widening that circle, opening a door for someone with potential but without opportunity.

Every act of care we take, however modest, compounds. It helps a person stand steady after a fall, rebuild confidence after loss, and, in some cases, reclaim a life. Ronnie’s story shows the world that rescue needn’t be superhuman to be heroic; it need only be persistent and humane.

A timely reminder of what we can do together

Stories like Ronnie’s are painful to read and yet strangely hopeful because they lay bare a truth we sometimes forget: futures aren’t sealed by our worst days. They are rewritten by the people who refuse to look away. Institutions like Genashtim remind us that kindness scales when it’s intentional; families like the Blairs show that kindness heals when it’s personal.

This season, let’s honor both kinds of generosity. If you have the means, the time, or the influence – give it. Mentor, donate, listen, comfort, open your home, open your workplace, share a skill. Pay it forward in a way that fits you. A single act, as Ronnie’s life proves, can make all the difference.

Warm season’s greetings to everyone– and to you, the reader. May the coming days be kinder, steadier, and full of second chances.

November marked an exciting milestone for Genashtim and the ESG Business Institute as we launched our first collaborative sustainability programme with Deloitte – the Deep Dive into Sustainability Reporting course. This two-day event brought together professionals from the Klang Valley, Malaysia, for an immersive, practical journey into the world of ESG disclosures.

And yes, the “alphabet soup” of sustainability reporting frameworks (GRI, IFRS S1 & S2, TCFD… the list goes on) can look intimidating at first glance. But as our participants quickly discovered, once you step into the logic, structure, and purpose behind these frameworks, the fear melts away. Sustainability reporting isn’t just a compliance exercise. It’s a powerful tool for presenting an organization’s impact, risks, and long-term value.

Day 1: Warming Up & Settling In

The morning began with a smooth registration as participants trickled in, some quietly taking their seats, others exchanging first hellos with new faces. There was a gentle buzz of curiosity in the room as they prepared to embark on this deep dive.

The trainer, Steve Young, had flown in from Singapore for the occasion. Originally from the Philippines, Steve brought with him decades of experience in corporate governance, supply chain, and commercial finance, as well as his rich consulting work across Singapore and Japan. His warm energy and humor set the tone right from his introduction.

The day kicked off with an icebreaker that got everyone talking about their own sustainability journeys, such as their experience in ESG reporting, what drew them to ESG, and the challenges they’ve met along the way.

After lunch, the energy shifted into full collaboration mode. Participants rolled up their sleeves for group case studies, digging into real examples, including the Singtel Sustainability Report. Groups explored risks, impacts, and disclosures across different sectors – from agriculture and human capital to telecommunications.

By the time Day 1 wrapped up, everyone was speaking more confidently in the ESG language. And maybe even enjoying it a little more than they expected.

Day 2: From Concepts to Calculations

If Day 1 built foundations, Day 2 was where everything clicked.

The focus shifted to greenhouse gas emissions accounting (Scopes 1, 2, and 3) and the practicalities of integrating sustainability data into organizational reporting. Participants learned how to apply materiality concepts, assess ESG risks, and piece together the story behind the numbers.

Steve also shared industry perspectives, including insights from his time with Procter & Gamble, which gave the room a look into how global companies embed sustainability into strategy and operations.

More case studies followed, this time featuring examples from Bursa Malaysia, and groups worked through calculations, scenarios, and disclosure decisions together.

By the end of Day 2, the sense of accomplishment was unmistakable. Participants were no longer merely observers of ESG trends; they were equipped, confident, and ready to contribute meaningfully to their organizations’ sustainability reporting. Some were eager to go back and read up more to fully equip themselves with emerging trends of sustainability reporting.

What They Walked Away With

Across the two days, participants gained the ability to:

Understand and compare major sustainability frameworks

Analyse impact and financial materiality

Apply greenhouse gas accounting concepts

Integrate sustainability data into reporting processes

They walked away empowered. What once felt like a tangled ESG jungle now looked more like a navigable roadmap.

Closing Moments

The workshop ended with smiles, final reflections, and, of course, a proud group photo to commemorate the start of something meaningful.

This inaugural session set a strong foundation for many more collaborations to come. Together with Deloitte, we look forward to bringing more high-impact sustainability programmes to organizations across Malaysia.
